The Brooklyn Food Coalition proposes linking Christmas Tree Recycling with Fall Leaf Recycling.  No, not by reconstructing a holiday tree from fallen maple leaves, though that’s sorta cool too.  We’re talkin’ law.

If you want the city to compost leaves left on your curb just as they do with the trees they pick up, you can help!  Find out more here and send your thoughts to brooklynfoodjustice (at) gmail (dot) com.

Feeling crafty?  Cut five big “leaves” from cardboard, punch a hole atop each leaf to thread twine through & around the tree, write one word on each leaf: BRING. BACK. FALL. LEAF. COLLECTION.  You always knew trees could talk…

On the agenda is, first and foremost, MUCH gratitude to all participants and supporters who made Project LeafDrop a success!  Because of your efforts, at least seven tons of fallen leaves will be composted and returned to the soil of NYC community gardens and tree beds.

There’s still work to be done, so gracious gardeners, please remember to send your surveys and petitions to Jess and Beth.  You can scan them in an email to compost (at) nycleaves (dot) org or just simply email/call us for an alternate plan.

So we – community gardeners, neighborhood associations, and concerned residents – are uniting to harvest and compost fallen leaves, and to document our efforts. We want to keep the compostables out of landfills and persuade the City Council and the Mayor to reinstate the Department of Sanitation’s compost project.

Saturday, Nov. 7, was our first day of collection — one garden reported getting almost 600 pounds!
