The City will compost your Christmas trees if you leave them on the curb, but this weekend, many local parks will mulch them, and some will give you mulch to take home!

The Brooklyn Food Coalition proposes linking Christmas Tree Recycling with Fall Leaf Recycling. No, not by reconstructing a holiday tree from fallen maple leaves, though that’s sorta cool too. We’re talkin’ law.

If you want the city to compost leaves left on your curb just as they do with the trees they pick up, you can help! Find out more here and send your thoughts to brooklynfoodjustice (at) gmail (dot) com.

Feeling crafty? Cut five big “leaves” from cardboard, punch a hole atop each leaf to thread twine through & around the tree, write one word on each leaf: BRING. BACK. FALL. LEAF. COLLECTION. You always knew trees could talk…

wheel of compost fortune

On the agenda is, first and foremost, MUCH gratitude to all participants and supporters who made Project LeafDrop a success! Because of your efforts, at least seven tons of fallen leaves will be composted and returned to the soil of NYC community gardens and tree beds.

There’s still work to be done, so gracious gardeners, please remember to send your surveys and petitions to Jess and Beth. You can scan them in an email to compost (at) nycleaves (dot) org or just simply email/call us for an alternate plan.

Thanks as well to a few new folks who swept in and brought even more light to our plight:

Brad Lander: Represent!

Brad Lander, civic leader and newly elected Council Member, who brought a carload of leaves to 6/15 Green. Keep composting, Brad!

Derek Denckla for depicting our community gardeners in all their leafy glory on his site, the Greenest.

Jennifer Brookland and Mike Mclaughlin for the timely Daily News article on Project LeafDrop in East New York.

And thanks especially to David Buckel from the Brooklyn Food Coalition, who is now taking the lead on leaf compost advocacy in New York City. The latest news is this: If you have a story to share – even just a few paragraphs – about city-sponsored compost initiatives affecting the health and sustainability of your community, please send an email to brooklynfoodjustice (at) gmail (dot) com. The more truth we have to tell, the stronger the case for compost will be!

Wishing you a joyous and healthy new year,

NYCLeaves

To repeat: Last year, our NYC Council representatives cut the collection and compost of residential leaves out of the city’s budget.

So we – community gardeners, neighborhood associations, and concerned residents – are uniting to harvest and compost fallen leaves, and to document our efforts. We want to keep the compostables out of landfills and persuade the City Council and the Mayor to reinstate the Department of Sanitation’s compost project.

Saturday, Nov. 7, was our first day of collection — one garden reported getting almost 600 pounds!

Last year, our NYC Council representatives cut the collection and compost of residential leaves out of the city’s budget.

So we – community gardeners, neighborhood associations, and concerned residents – are uniting to harvest and compost fallen leaves, and to document our efforts. We want to keep the compostables out of landfills and persuade the City Council and the Mayor to resinstate the Department of Sanitation’s compost project.

Join the LeafDrop party! Bring your leaves to these gardens on Saturday.
